Film Simulation vs Editing RAW
Quick post this week. I love shooting with my Fuji X100V. It’s very manual which means very easy and fast to get the desired settings for the shot. The film simulations help with composing the shot and for producing usable images right out of the camera. These features produce amazing results when every goes well. But the camera is not very forgiving. One or two things off and the image is unusable. Part of this is due to the Fuji simply not having the focus or max ISO capability of the Sony cameras.
Why would I still use the Fuji X100V? A big advantage is that it looks like a vintage film camera. People tend to be less afraid of it, most of the time they are actually curious. So it makes take street photos much easier. I also thing that some of its limitations make you think more about the shot and it’s framing. It’s more of a film experience. Because of this, i’ve taken some of my favorite images with this camera.
Sunset at the strip mall
I was on my way home when I noticed the vibrant colors of the strip mall against the cloud filled deep purple sky. Also it’s rare to see cloud formations like that in SLO, which made me definitely want to stop and take this image.
The top image is a JPG straight from the camera. I liked it until I did a quick edit on the RAW file in Lightroom Classic. Take a look and leave a comment as to what you like / don’t like about each version.
Drink of the week 🥃
This is loosely a drink of the week. Decided to make my first trip to Saints Barrel in SLO. Not sure why I haven’t been there. It’s an amazing place that’s 5min from my house. The sun was setting behind me and I took a few shots of my glowing beer with a flower / stick arrangement in the background.
First two shots are before I placed my beer. These are straight out of the camera. First is Classic Mono followed by Provia 100F. I like the look of both, but should have upped the exposure compensation 1/3 or 2/3 stops on the Provia.
Next three images show beer… finally. Unedited Classic Mono, followed by Lightroom edited Mono, and Lightroom edits color. While I like the mono images, I feel like colors are quite nice here and this works better as a color image. But would love to hear what you think!
What’s next?
Just about down shooting 4 rolls of film on my Holga and Vivatar 35mm. Took 24 of 36 shots of Ilford Ortho BW ISO 80. Super slow film and I shot hand held in a 30 year old point and shoot. Should be interesting…
